About Chatsworth and Murray County Georgia
Chatsworth, Georgia is a quiet little town in Murray County, 85 miles north of Atlanta, Georgia and 44 miles southeast of Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was incorporated in 1906. Legend has it that it was named after a sign that had fallen off of a railroad car that had passed through. The sign was picked up and nailed to a post to designate the city.
Fort Mountain can be seen from Chatsworth, and Fort Mountain State Park is just a short drive away. With a huge network of well-kept trails, creeks, and campsites throughout the scenic mountains, Fort Mountain is a beautiful place to spend a day or a weekend outdoors. There are hiking, mountain biking, and horse trails, a lake with a lakeside beach, and campsites for your enjoyment.
Another great attraction located in Chatsworth is the Chief Vann House. This was the historic home of Chief James Vann, leader of the Cherokee Nation and a wealthy businessman. His son Joseph also became a leader of the nation after the murder of his father, and both of their families lived in this elegant home until the Cherokee were forced to leave the area on the "Trail of Tears" and relocate to Oklahoma. You can take a guided tour of the home to see the beautiful furnishings and antiques, along with the "floating" staircase.
For those just looking for a relaxing getaway, there are plenty of cabin and vacation rentals available in and around Chatsworth, and with the other attractions in the area, Chatsworth is a great place for a relaxing mountain getaway.
